buying a tripod

December 5th, 2011
Hi, I'm about to purchase a tripod for Christmas but I have nearly no clue on what to get.
I'd like to buy it from Amazon and my budget would be around 150 euros max.
I like street shots from low point of view (in the range below 50 cm) and I'm currently using a Canon G12 but will eventually buy a DSLR in the future.
Here some tripods on that price range

* Konig KN-TRIPOD100
* Giotto MTL9351
* Cullmann Magnesit 525M

any tips?
thank you in advance for your help

Find a Manfrotto that fits your budget.

@sburbidge I've seen some Manfrotto but prices seem crazy (at least for my budget and needs): the tripod itself seems to be in my range, but if you add the price of the head...

if you want your tripod to be suitable for a DSLR, you'll want to get something a lot more rugged than the cheap and nasty stuff (max weight capacity of 5kg upwards IMO). You also want to make sure whichever tripod you get has a good warranty policy as they have the tendency to wear out quickly especially if you use it in wet/dusty conditions.

I have a manfrotto 190XPROB with a 3 way head (definitely prefer these to ball heads) and it is a GREAT tripod for what i do. although it is a bit heavy on long day trips, i'd probably get a carbon fibre one for my next tripod but that would blow your 150 euro budget i reckon.

@scatochef thanx. My rationale is the following:

1. I'm not a pro and I reckon I'll never be a pro
2. I prefere to save some money for a DSLR (which will never be a pro DSLR though)
3. I think (thought at least) 150 euro is more than enough given my needs

Manfrotto - price is higher but it will last years. cheaper tripods will have to be replaced

@cchambers Looks like none of the Manfrotto models on Amazon fits my need: either around 50 euros, or above 200...

@sburbidge totally agree with Manfrotto....got one for a present..just awesome..and I would buy another when this one eventually dies....

my last tripod was pretty cheap...and had terrible creep...bloody thing would move inches or more! The Manfrotto will last for years and is SO solid, It was a present but I'm pretty sure the tripod with a head cost about £120... @woot

what's everyone think of the gorillapod (for slr)?????

I am also looking to buy a tripod for Christmas and after reading a previous discussion on here had heard good things about the Manfrotto. Can anyone tell me the main differences between the Manfrotto 190XDB and the Manfrotto 190XPROB? Is the second one worth the $60 more?

I just bought a Manfrotto 785B for 50 euros. I know that's not what you need but I'm really satisfied, especially after checking the Cullmans - they are plastic, cheap and not very well made (at least in the same price range). Is it really necessary to buy an additional head?
@leigh7900 : I own a gorillapod for my small point and shoot and, even though it's really flexible and fun to use, it is sometimes too flexible and not steady enough for night shots.

@looseimages can you please tell me which model you're referring to? sounds great to me...

@leigh7900 I carry a gorillapod for my point and shoot and it's fun, but I tend to wrap it round things rather than expect it to stand rigidly for most shots - not sure it would take the weight of a SLR or DSLR

I can't help you comparing prices, but we bought a Manfrotto and heard over and over again that you rather need to spend a bit more for good quality. You cannot go without a tri-pod!!! We also have a monopod but use the tri-pod more often. Good luck!

@woot I'm no pro for sure. I have an inexpensive, off-brand tripod that has its quirks, but it's right for my purposes (I use a DSLR). Good job in saving your money for the camera. You'll the tripod now and then. You'll use the camera every day.

I'm sorry I can't offer advise on the three choices you recommend. I usually weigh my Amazon.com choices heavily on the feedback. Look at the feedback, especially the negative feedback and see what others who've purchased those tripods have to say.

I've a Titall tripod. holds my canon 1d mark ii with a 70-200 2.8 and a flash just fine and solid. That is nearly 3 kilos. They are relatively inexpensive compared to manfrotto, gitzo and such. Just not as sexy.
@shanne my gorilla pod focus will handle the rig I mention here. It is supposed to do 11kg, not sure about that!

@shanne @eyetoeye @johnnyfrs @herussell @lilbudhha thanx everyone for sharing your experience and coming up with useful tips! I'll search a bit more before purchasing it! Looks like the Manfrotto website has some interesting deals and some tripods in my budget.

Now,if it were Manfrotto, which model would you suggest for a beginner who will probably use it in the future with a DSLR (amatorial/semi-pro)?
The website has an offer of a M-Y + 494RC2 at 140 euro
At least please help me to narrow down the series I should consider since I'm getting a bit lost :)

thanx again
