Idea for Year Two (or Three)

December 13th, 2011
So as I reach the end of my first year here on 365, I know without a doubt that I will participate in Year Two. I am sure that I will not get a photo every single day, or be obsessed about posting them. I also probably will have less commenting, but am still excited to find new talent that inspires me. So in talking about inspiration there are still photos and techniques I really want to work on, and I am trying to come up with 50 ideas(one per week) where I can work on a new style, technique, revisit a topic from this year. So first, I ask if you can help come up with the ideas, and then if you want to work on them with me each week so we can compare and contrast.

So far my list is
Water drops
Burning Light Bulbs
Household Abstract
Candle Light
Shadows
Layering of Photos
Levitation
Bokeh (well this is 365)
Star Trails/Moon Shot
Light Painting
Fizzy Water Shot
Object Captured in Ice

So let me hear your ideas and if you want to participate. I will post the list here and on facebook with dates (and yes, I will check the moon, tide, weather, holiday, season schedules of course) before the end of the year. I think the week starting January 9th is a good place to start. You would only have to do one during the weeks you are available so there is no forced pressure here

Paula, I was just wondering about this over the weekend. For a time, I considered just ending my project after the first year. It's been a hell of a year and I'm a very public person so everyone on this site has been privy to everything. But...when I noticed how many of the items on your list are photos I shoot frequently and write tutorials for, I think I might just keep going. For all of you, of course.

Here are my additional suggestions:

Jason is Awesome
Light trails
B&W
Portraits
Self portraits
Jason is Awesome
Panoramas
Food Photography
Multiple Exposures
Outdoor Fill Flash
Flash Photography (not THAT kind silly!)
Jason is Still Awesome
Fireworks
Street Photography
Jason is Just So Awesome

Those are my additions. I'm getting an ACE account to start off 2012, I'm still trying to come up with ideas for three albums, but I think one might be Tutorials. Nothing but me teaching you now I did what I done. I don't know about the other two yet.
December 13th, 2011
I do plan on continuing but probably won't be daily like this past year. I love your ideas you have here!! I did think of maybe doing an A to Z challenge for myself, or maybe colors. Also, I would love to do more water stuff. I know I would like to practice more "scenic" shots but hard to do living where I live. I probably won't be able to start until after Jan. 9. My year is up January 15.

I would love to participate, but probably will be a little limited depending on my time and what is going on in my life. LOL

If I think of any ideas, I will let you know!
December 13th, 2011
@brumbe How about a single subject week? Where all your photos have to feature one object?
December 13th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I like tutorial idea, I need all the help I can get!

@beautifulthing I like that idea too!
December 13th, 2011
@brumbe @jasonbarnette - I'm only 2/3s of the way through, but have been thinking I'll continue and probably take a more studied approach - try to learn specific things. I've found it takes a lot of time to produce one thing for this every day - take pics, do more or less processing, comment on others' pics, think about all of it A LOT. For my sake, I hope both of you stick around for what you provide for some of the rest of us - both of you are good teachers and inspirations. Thanks for all that you do.
December 13th, 2011
Toward the end of each month, take an object, person, scene , ... (same one each month) and apply a technique you were learning to do better earlier that month
December 13th, 2011
I'm thinking for year 2, I will just follow all of @jasonbarnette 's tutorials, and then complain when they don't turn out right. :) Kidding.
December 13th, 2011
@jasonbarnette you forgot that Paula is Duchess of Awesomeness as a Theme. also if you notice one on my list is one of your tutorials tutorial, and two are things I struggled with this year already.
December 13th, 2011
I'm going to carry on into Year 2 as well. That'll start on Jan 1st for me :) I gave myself rules for last year, that I would take a photo each and every day and that I would post them sooc. I've kept to them both so far, but next year I will allow myself to edit. Although I still don't know everything about my camera I'm a lot happier with using it to achieve what I want, which was sort of the point of doing my project sooc.

So I think that shall be my sole theme for the year...editing! (and learning how to edit!)

Oh and @jasonbarnette am going to watch out for your jason is awesome tutorial lol!
December 13th, 2011
A week of shot worthy where we pretend we are taking photos with film and have a limited number of chances to get the shot in.,
December 13th, 2011
@hjbenson I like your idea. That goes along with what I was thinking about doing. I am in the thinking stage now. One of my ideas was to work harder on specific compositional elements and also on breaking the rules. That would go along with your idea.
December 13th, 2011
I have lots of ideas for my second year, but I have not completely decided what I will do. I have thought about doing more of a daily journal format. I would like to explore the following more in depth: layers, processing, editing, cropping, collages, and B &W. I want to take shots of my subjects from long range, mid range, and close up, as well as from various perspectives and angles. I want to compare how these look.
December 14th, 2011
I'm getting near the end of my year, too and also want to continue but probably also not on a daily basis. Some good suggestions above and some I would also like to learn and practice. I haven't thought of too many ideas of my own yet except so far:
shadows,
hdr processing
silhouetting people
night shots
December 14th, 2011
@scooter Right now, I'm thinking I'll have a Travel Photography album for all my regular stuffs, a Tutorial album where I'll shoot photos daily or three times a week or just whenever and tell everyone how I did it, but I don't know what to do with the third album??

@mej2011 Haha...that was hilarious. But not true!

@minxymissk Every day is Jason is Awesome day!

@brumbe I had noticed the broken light bulb idea, but also star trails! I shoot tons of them things.
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette Yeah...I think I'll need the tutorial ;)
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
What part wasn't true? The part of me following your tutorials? Or me failing them? lol. You're right, I might not follow them because they might be too technical, but I'm pretty sure I have the fail part down. :)
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette For family Christmas I got a new tripod, tripod head, and remote. Now I just have to figure out how to make the bulb setting work on an Olympus E620 So star trails is something I really want to try
December 14th, 2011
@brumbe When I get my cameras back, it should be a new moon which is the perfect time for star trails. I'll shoot another and write a good tutorial for it. Maybe.
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette I think I am all set on concept, just not how to keep the shutter open long enough and of course I am a rebellious person and own an olympus so I sometimes feel like technical camera questions are not relevant (such as which lens for a nikon or canon).
December 14th, 2011
Tutorials are sometimes fun to do, Astrophotography might be worth a shot, I know I will be trying again, Pintrest has a lot of great photos for inspiration, Before & After collage, I'm still working on some of these and probably will for some time to come, but there are some great things listed, Not sure if you have an off camera flash or are getting one, but here's a DIY tip, Some tips for storm photography I plan on trying out, I know you have tried landscape photography in the past, maybe these tips will help where you feel you're lacking...

Can you tell I just trolled through my fav's? I had one more idea but I cannot for the life of me figure out where to find it. I fav'd a photo on here so I could remember and it nor the photog are on here anymore....I will find it eventually. I get the idea behind it but I couldn't tell you the technicals for post processing.
December 14th, 2011
@brumbe if you go to manual mode, you should be able to change the shutter speed, the last setting should be bulb....or have you already tried this? Don't mean to make it sound like you aren't the brightest "bulb" (LOL had to)....
December 14th, 2011
@brumbe The 600 Rule tells you now to do star trails: use the equation is to divide 600 / focal length to determine your shutter time for trails. Using a 50mm lens means you'll have star trails with a minimum exposure of 12 seconds.

I shoot at 800 ISO, f/4, 30 second exposures at a time and then merge them together in Photoshop. I typically shoot for 45 minutes - three hours.
December 14th, 2011
@shadesofgrey I can get to bulb, but I could not get the remote to lock, I will have to try later this week again.

Great ideas. I will probably have a list together later this week, there are some great ideas.
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette hopefully when I am in Maryland this weekend (less light than in Center City Philadelphia) I can try this.
December 14th, 2011
@brumbe Nope, you won't be trying it this weekend. The moon is still too bright. If you used those settings this time of the month your photos would be white. The moon puts out a lot of light. I can only shoot star trails about 6 days a month: three days before and after the new moon. That's not for another two weeks. :(
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette so I will need a moon schedule to determine the best week this year.
December 14th, 2011
@jasonbarnette . You forgot that Jason is effin freaken amazingly awesome...
December 14th, 2011
@brumbe You get 6 days each month, twelve times a year to shoot star trails. Yep...in fact, I have found I need to know the sun schedule, moon schedule, tide schedule, and moon phases to shoot good photography. Here are some links to help haha.

December 14th, 2011
@brumbe So ignore the landscape one....not the link I thought it was, sorry!
December 14th, 2011
These are all great ideas! I will make sure I copy/paste them when every finishes adding ideas. I am not finished with MY project until June...but I may try some of these anyway...or keep them for my second year.
December 14th, 2011
@espyetta you can do them no matter when year twostarts for you. I really like the concept because I will not keep pushing off the things I am not confident to try. Or something I want to redo
December 14th, 2011
As far as the remote goes....on your camera, looking down at the top. On the left are two shiny buttons, the one closest to you (if you are holding it normally) is the selector for sequential shooting. In your viewfinder, when you press the button, you should see
b-d H for sequential high,
b-d L for low,
SelF 12 or 2 depending on timer needs,
l- - d 0 or 2 if you want the shutter to snap 2 seconds after the remote button is pressed or right away.

It looks like the receiver is on the shutter button side of the camera when you go to point the remote....I have found that if I can't see the correct side of the camera for my remote, it wont' fire, frustrating for sure.

Notes (from the manual)
The shutter will not be released if the subject is not in focus.
• Under bright light conditions, the remote control lamp may be difficult to see, making it hard to determine whether or not the picture has been taken.
• Zoom is not available on the remote control.

According to the photo info your camera is an Olympus Evolt e620....if thats right here's a link you might find helpful: http://www.molon.de/E620/

AND I finally found the one I really wanted to show you: http://www.ryanbrenizer.com/2011/05/brenizer-method-instructions/
watch the video, it's long but very informative.....I think you will feel like it's above your head but I bet you could do it with some practice!

How about :
- Composition (maybe several shots, experiment with different compositions )
- Story telling (a good picture tells a story. We could write a "scene", which then should be converted to a picture)
- Textures ( maybe combination of shooting a great texture shot and also using it as an overlay to some other photo)
- Reduced / fixed color palette (the pic can only have 3 colors, or the colors must be black, white and red ...)
- Depth (Something in the front, something behind it, something way back there... to make eye travel through the picture)
- Think out of the box / go crazy (This could be applied to other ideas on the list, you shoot a star trail shot, then revisit it later when you have the technique down & do something unexpected with the shot)
- Do the opposite (Pick a photography rule, do the exact opposite and make it work, like "take a pic of kids down on their level" --> shoot way above or below )

@brumbe Thank you for making this list! Earlier this week, I wrote down things I would like to try next year. Here are several that I don't think are on your list. Contrasts (old/new, light/dark, rough, smooth, solid, blurred, warm, cold), Framing (I know this has been done before---I personally need more experience with this one), collage, B &W (something I have to twist my arm to do) and sepia. Perhaps some of these can be placed on the list???
December 14th, 2011
@daisy will be added to the updated list. great ideas
December 15th, 2011

I would say move the burning light bulb to march and street photos to apr....better weather in April, most places anyway. It's up to you though...I really like it and will participate as much as I can!
December 15th, 2011
great suggestion @shadesofgrey
