Self portrait 'photography' ?

June 20th, 2010
I've always loved dressing up ever since I was 4, and I always liked 'posing' for pictures, although I am a bit camera shy. I like the whole idea of modelling, and I also like photographing people.
I find taking self portraits a good way to express my feelings on the day I take the picture, and the whole dressing up is very relaxing, and the editing is even more fun.
Is self portrait photography really a type of photography?

Of course it is! You are the one subject you can always count on to be patient! :) Plus I think there is a little bit of self-discovery in any self portrait.

A camera is involved so it is photography!

Of course! And may I say, yours always come out amazing :)

I don't know if her work is considered self PORTRAIT or not, but she uses herself as the subject in 99% of her work and she's so creative. To answer your question, yes - it's absolutely photography. http://365project.org/landmeetswater/365

i agree with Chris, you use a camera, its photography, unless you're using said camera to squish a bug.....unless you take a picture of thw squished bug after you kill it, in which case its photography again.

lol yeah, I agree with everyone! good stuff, take photos and see where it gets you and what you learn! I used to do those happy snap things of myself when on holiday and sometimes they turn out, sometimes they dont.

Personally, I think that with self photography one of the hardest things is focus and composition. Ideally you'd put something or nab a random to stand in your place, focus, turn it to manual, run in there and take the "something"s place. I never had the time / patience to do this so all mine look horrible :)

Good luck and I'm keen on seeing how the rest of yours turn out. Especially in say 6 months time and looking back from where you started to where you are then

@Chris: I hope you weren't drinking at the time. If you were, I apologize for any damp keyboards or computer sceens. =D

It is definitely photography. It takes a fair bit of skill to do it well too. Getting the focusing right can be tricky sometimes. Running to make the 10 second timer is a familiar feeling for me for sure.
