I've been wanting the 55-300mm lens from Nikon for a while now, but I have heard mixed reviews about it. Some people have said the auto-focus is too slow for any action shots, and that from 200mm - 300mm the focus isn't as sharp.
If you have this lens, or have used it before, what do you think?
I don't have that lens... but that makes perfect sense. unless the lens was $10k one end has to be less sharp than the other... so if the 300 end is softer than the 50 end will b sharp... and auto-focus at 300 is always tough.. hence why you likely have a manual override (well we do in pentax, i am sure nikons can sill focus manually
telephoto lenses have always been a series of comprimises... having one 50-300 lens beats having to carry a 50, 85, 100 135, 150, 200, 300 primes to ge...t the same range
The link below has reviews I trust: He says the 70-300m VR is better, and the 55-200mm is slightly sharper, but the 55-300mm is a good value. He also says it focuses close enough that you can get pseudo macro performance out of it.
If you can afford the 70-300mm VR, I have heard nothing but good things about that lens from anyone who owns it (I own none of these myself)
There are lots of other reviews as well. He recommends the 28-300mm.
I have an 18-200mm VR and it works great. FOr the longer stuff I have a Sigma 50-500mm which also works great but it is a massive lens.Lone Star Digital has this to say about the Sigma lens: http://www.lonestardigital.com/Sigma_50-500.htm
Thank you all for your replies! I think that, after doing a little more research, I'm going to save up for the 70-300mm. I think it'll be worth it. Thanks for all the links and feedback! :)

The AF is bound to be slow if the light isn't good. But shooting birds in full sun you should be ok.
