I didn't see this year's competition through search so I want to share with 365er's that the National Geographic Competition is still open. There is a $15 entry fee. I've looked through lots of the entries and believe I've seen some much more high caliber photos on this site, so give it a try! I should add I haven't looked through all the photos because the site is extensive, so some of you may have entered already.
Worth taking a look at the rules before paying your $15, two that stand out:
'Photographs must have been taken within two (2) years before the date of entry...'
'Only minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable, as is cropping. High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are NOT acceptable. Any changes to the original Photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the Photograph ineligible for a prize.'
Also note that they require signed releases should the photo contain anything that has third-party rights (e.g. other people, buildings, statues, property, etc.)
I just watched an old National Geographic special on Netflix that was about the magazine's photographers. Very entertaining, yet sobering in that it reveals that it isn't the most glamourous job in the world as many think. Spending weeks stuck in a rainforest, being eaten alive by insects while you suffer through the most stiffling humidity in hopes of getting "the shot" isn't what its cracked up to be. Still, I'd sell my soul to work for them. :-P
Sounds like a standard day in Papua New Guinea @cromwell ! I have more then one occasion endured swamps, humidity and biting insects for that one shot... and I paid for the experience. Lucky my day job helps out from time to time.
