It seems like it's been awhile since a challenge was introduced that did not need Photoshop skills. Hopefully this challenge will capture more participants.
Recently I have been reminded over and over again how fleeting and fragile life is. We only have this moment and it is gone, never to come back. My personal attraction to photography is capturing the moment. Henri Cartier-Bresson did exactly that. So I challenge you to capture that "Decisive Moment" in a way Cartier-Bresson did.
Henri Cartier-Bresson was born on August 22, 1908 in Chanteloup, France. A pioneer in photojournalism, Cartier-Bresson wandered around the world with his camera, becoming totally immersed in his current environment. He was a founding member of Magnum, a photographic co-operative agency along with Robert Capa, George Rodger and David "Chim" Seymour. They created Magnum in 1947 to reflect their independent natures as both people and photographers - the idiosyncratic mix of reporter and artist that continues to define Magnum, emphasizing not only what is seen but also the way one sees it.
In 1952, Cartier-Bresson published his book Images à la sauvette, whose English edition was titled The Decisive Moment. It included a portfolio of 126 of his photos from the East and the West. For his 4,500-word philosophical preface, Cartier-Bresson took his keynote text from the 17th century Cardinal de Retz: "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment"). Cartier-Bresson applied this to his photographic style
Quotes by Cartier-Bresson
"Photography is not like painting. There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative," he said. "Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever."[
"I suddenly understood that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant."
"To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression."
The contest will run from today Sat. December 15th until midnight EST December 22. I will pick 5 and put them to a vote hopefully by December 23rd. It gets a little crazy here the day before Christmas. I will post the winner Thurs. Dec. 27th.
All images must be taken during the Dec.15-Dec. 22nd time period to be considered. Please tag your photo AC-CartierBresson. Hopefully we can have a lot of participation, I know this is a very busy time of year.
Looking forward to seeing how you capture "The Decisive Moment".
I LOVE LOVE this challenge. I think its the best so far.( And that is not to put anyone elses ideas down=).)
This is just going to be fun. His work is AMAZING!!!!
I managed to catch am exhibition of his work in Brisbane last year. Enviable stuff to say the least!
My interpretation is a little more about the "Stillness of the Moment" than the "Decisive Moment". Enjoy!
thank you, Elliot, i appreciate your comment so much. - um, i have a question - how do people post their titles or comments with their photos? i never have figured out how to do that. the title of this one is "Logan in Lace" - my grandson watching a red squirrel.
i was wondering how people post them in this thread with their photos, not in a separate box underneath - or, several boxes later! thank you so much for the compliment, btw, i appreciate it so much.
@catsmeowb - good question - you click reply - then make your comment and before you hit "Post Reply" you paste the photo which will be some computer code you get from your page next to share. This always confuses people!
What a lovely photo too!
Oh I wanted to do this but time escaped me - nice challenge
