Biomimicry Photo Challenge

I've started up a not-for-profit organisation BiomimicrySwarm Australia. To get things started we're have a photo challenge to highlight nature's genius in imagery. It is running over the period of the Sustainable Living Festival being held across Victoria from the 9th to the 24th.

Biomimicry comes from the Greek words bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate. It is the conscious emulation of nature's genius - forms, processes and systems - to solve design challenges in design, business, products, organisations, education, etc

Biomimicry looks to nature as mentor, model and measure to inspire innovative sustainable design solutions that create conditions conducive to all life on earth.

Biomimicry celebrates the fact that all life is interconnected and interdependent, calling on us to respect and creatively emulate the wisdom of the 300 million or so species that have adapted to living on this planet over 3.8 billion years.

We hope you will enjoy the challenge - the hashtag is #biomimic_lifesprinciples and the details are explained here:

Please join us in celebrating nature's genius!

I really appreciate the concept you are describing and would like to give the challenge a try - I see a link to the rules, but maybe it would help if you could also, right on your initial query, give a brief summary on what the main rules of the contest are, i.e. what are the main judging criteria? I guess I was just a bit confused what you were looking for. Thanks for teaching me a new word/concept - Its awesome that you are starting this non-profit org! Very Cool! Thanks for your input, I will be sure to tell my 365 friends about your contest and will encourage everyone to enter, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your input Christy - @mrsc19
Most excellent points - this is the 1st time I've attempted such a thing and my technology skills are rather basic (tho growing through trial and error)
Elements of a winning photograph - best representation of the particular life's principle with a few words to describe how (unless its really obvious).

Life’s Principles are the master set of strategies found in nature that create conditions conducive to life, they are:
- Evolve to Survive #biomimic_evolve
- Be Resource Efficient (materials & energy) #biomimic_resource-eff
- Be locally attuned and responsive #biomimic_locally
- Integrate development with growth #biomimic_integrate
- Use Life Friendly Chemistry #biomimic_life-chemistry
- Adapt to Changing Conditions #biomimic_adapt

I've tried to explain and illustrate these ideas here: : http://biomimicryswarm.org/2013/02/08/biomimicry-photo-challenge-part-2/
In thinking a bit more about it i expect it would have been easier to do one principle at a time - maybe that's what I try next..........
No rules on processing - that's totally up to you.
cheers

Hi Jane,
Interesting concept, I am however confused as to the exact nature of the competition and how to enter. (I would be entering via this project or by email)
Your explanation of biomimicry is very indepth but the actual competition details are unclear, I am unsure of what the prizes (if any) are.
A concise 'how to enter' section would be great. And yes, I think the scope of the subject is too broad. Is your target audience photographers/everyday people or scientists?
I mean only constructive observation, I would enter if I could understand what to do :)

@monika64 Agreed. And the sad thing is that this- "the conscious emulation of nature's genius ... to solve design challenges" is something that really interests me. Not that I'd have any chance of winning, but I would still like to know!

@monika64 @Cheesebiscuit
Thanks for the valuable and constructive feedback Monika and Yes-no-Maybe.
Monika - I understand the confusion and I think its that all the technology has stymied me to some extent. I've leaped into this without fully understanding hashtaggery - I thought if you posted images here and included the hashtag that the image would be findable - is that how the competitions work? (I'm pretty new at this). I started off with the idea of it just being an instagram challenge but then wildly thought to include facebook and twitter as possible places to post also,
The target is everyone who is interested in nature (must be everyone) - there's a bit of learning and lateral thinking involved.
I don't think there is a prize apart from adulation - though I may be able to swing an on-line Introductory course to Biomimicry.....
Yes-No-Maybe - Sorry to have made you sad - biomimicry is really interesting and full of potential to improve how we do things - you can find out more about it here - http://www.asknature.org/ There is no reason you wouldn't win.
