I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who comments on my pictures! I catch myself sometimes posting the same comments over and over again. Do you? Great Shot! Love the color! Nicely done! Love it! I wish I had the time to elaborate more on more pictures but boy does time fly by when you're immersed in this banquet of photographic loveliness!
I want you all to know that when I post those comments and when I see those comments in my own posts from you, I read a little more into it than just "great shot!" I'm telling you that they mean, "hey, your picture caught my eye and I had to click through to view it closer, I like the story behind your picture, and I may click around and look through more of your pictures. You're doing great and I can't wait to see what you do next."
I use your comments to fuel me. If I get a number of comments on a photo, I think to myself, "ok, several people think this is good or interesting. Why? What is it about that photo that worked?" Then I try to apply that to future pictures.
So the next time you feel like you're posting the same old comment again and again, remember the person that receives it knows it most likely means a bit more.
Totally agree with you there, I try to say a bit more if I can but often find myself saying those things - but I really do mean it when I say it!! I just love to see comments under my photos, I appreciate it when someone has looked at my photo but also felt like they wanted to say something :)
I use Wow and Cool a lot. This is to express great enthusiasm. I try not to say the same thing that others say. But...sometimes someone else says it just right. I appreciate comments a lot, knowing that someone out there in cyberspace took a moment to say hello.
You are very right. I try so hard to elaborate on why I like the photo or why I'm saying what I am but sometimes I just can't. Wow or stunning is the only word that works. =)
I agree! I try to go into a little more detail when I can, but lately I've been so busy that I only have time to leave a quick comment. And sometimes I just can't think of anything to say beyond "Amazing!" "Awesome shot!" blah, blah. ;-) And I always appreciate everyone who takes the time to comment on my photos.
Ditto here. I try to leave more substantial comments, but often I don't have time to leave more than a couple of words. Those few words may sound shallow, but the fact that I took the time to type them means I *really* like a photo :)
I say the same thing over and over again. I am saying more and would like to some times. Just taking the time to comment is great. I have more views than comments and always wondered why someone would take the time to click on the thumb nail but not leave a comment.
haha! definitely agree with everything you said in your post!! I feel myself typing out the same comment too - but I really mean more than that - like you said it's just not enough time to fully elaborate on the picture!
Someone once said on here they are just happy someone took the time to look at your picture even if they don't leave a comment. Leaving a comment is a bonus.
Sometimes I think I write too much! I think about the nice comments I have received from all of you and how much I enjoy reading them, whether they are full paragraphs, or just one or two word comments. I'm happy with any type of positive feedback but would also welcome constructive criticism. ;-)
Yeah, a lot of comments I see are along those lines.
I always try to be a little more specific, saying what I like about the picture. If it is just the "Love the Color" comment, I will say "I love the color of the _____ and how it works with _____." I think it not only helps the photographer, but it helps you out as well. Plus it takes up more room and makes it look like you spent more effort into it.
Sometimes, I am just at a loss for words and all I can get out is the one or two words. But like everyone else, just the fact that someone made a comment of any kind makes my day.
I always feel soooo bad for doing the same thing. I feel like I repeat myself over and over. If something really blows my mind or I have a similar experience to somethign that they've written about, I will say more, but usually it is just very simple comments to let them know "Your photo caught my eye and I really like it". I probably look at 200 or more photos on here everyday, and I just can't figure out how to say "I really love this shot" in 200 different ways. Hahah. So, if you see a comment from me that is very simple or quick (or even similar to something you see that I have said to someone else too), know that it has a lot of meaning. I love getting comments no matter how simple or lengthy. Like you said, Sandra, I use them as fuel for future photos! :)
Short comments..elaborate comments they are all the same as they show me that the person took the time to look at my picture and spent the time to leave a comment which I so appreciate so much.... and now thanks to the @ thing it brings us even closer together when we have a question about a picture we are viewing it shows that person that we are truly interested and looking forward to a reply. thank you Ross for coming up with this great idea.
I couldn't agree more with what you said!! There is so many wonderful pictures on 365, that I am often lost for words! Sometimes a simple "Love it!" says it all! And i do mean it! ;-)
I am guilty of this, but I do try hardest to elaborate a bit more in what I like about the picture, a certain part, composition or if I'm brave enough, provide constructive feedback what I might have done. (if I know they'll be ok with it) I try to avoid the two word comments.
I've said this before on a previous thread, but I think the one to leave most detailed comments it's definitely Weezilou
It's great to hear that so many others feel the same way about wanting to leave more comments but are unable. I'm so thankful for everyone's comments and for being able to view the diversity of creativity on this site.
I keep a thesaurus handy. Get to see beautiful photos AND learn a word a day ;)
I too thrive on the feedback, no matter the brevity. I often discover folks by way of their link in a comment on my own shots. Found many of my favorites that way. LOVE this community!
Thank you for putting into words what many of us are thinking, and in doing so, allaying our guilt for not being more specific with our praise. I've noticed that the quality on this site keeps getting better and better. Just look at the Popular Page for a moment and compare it with what you can recall from even 6 months ago. We have many many amazing artists on this site.
Thanks for posting this because this is something I've actually thought and worried about a little. I have read threads on Flickr or other places with people complaining about those types of generic comments. For me, it's good to hear any type of feedback, and sometimes I don't write too much when commenting. =)
This is all too true. I hope now when people read this thread they'll realize that even comments that are short and sweet mean as much as any other.
Couldn't have said it better myself! Feedback is feedback, whether it's positive, constructive or just a simple "love it!" and it means people are seeing your work and they like it!
I have the same problem! For me, it's less of 'I have no time', and more of, 'I want to comment on this and compliment them, but I can't think of anything to say' . xD
I do that all the time. Sometimes I don't really know what to say, but if I fave a picture I usually have specific reasons I point out why I liked it. It usually has to do with it being a cool new concept, a flawless shot or has some nostalgic/humorous value.
It also depends on my mood. Some days I don't have much to say, and others I'm more descriptive/aware about what it is that attracts me to a piece. Sometimes I also get on a roll when I cruise around the site for a while and get thinking about how to comment constructively.
Thank you for making this thread. I totally agree. I really wish I had more time to be much more elaborate and to give back the same amount of commenting and viewing of pictures that I receive.
I totally agree with you, I too wish I had more time to elaborate but when I do comment on the few photos I have time for, it is very important to me and every comment I recieve is just as meaningful to me.
I agree with everything, but the "What is it about that photo that worked? Then I try to apply that to future pictures" part. I totally disagree with that.Maybe it`s just me,but I never let my personal style get influenced by peoples feedback,I try to better myself according to my own personal view of things.Should I give up on macro-shots if I only get comments for scenery-photos,or viceversa?
Yes,I love this online comunity and all that comes with it,but in the end,I`m doing it for myself,to feed my passion and let it grow.
@spaceman I didn't mean that to say I'd stop doing certain types of photos if I don't get comments. I just meant that if something is working, then I want to see if I can identify what was good so I can keep doing it. If the composition was good, then maybe I'm on the right track. I take pictures of what I like when I like and hope that others enjoy them. I'll never stop taking pictures of my silly cats just because I don't get comments. I just use the comments to help me improve my game. Thanks for your two cents, it's ALL valuable to me! by the way, your profile picture, is that Muse artwork?
This is a good topic and makes me feel better. I usually feel guilty about leaving such mindless feedback, but if I spend all my time on the computer...what time will I have left for the camera, the books, the food, the friends, the arts, the....
well said...i sometimes get very frustrated at my lack of time to comment on pictures i really like...time just disappears...so if someone comments on one of mine I really really, appreciate it!
I wish I could comment more often...but if I spend any more time on here my husband might leave me !
I know what you mean! So true! For me is even harder, because English is not my first language and sometimes is hard to elaborate! So, most of the times, when I say: "great shot", or " I love your photo" I actually want to say so much more! I can think of lots of things to say about a picture in Portuguese, but sometimes it is so hard to translate them in English!
I love comments getting them and leaving them. Although I do the standard great shot, love it, cool, I also try to comment on what the photo makes me think about (a memory, something similar I've seen, etc.) I also try to use my comments as a mini-conversation...as much as I learn about you all through you photos, comments are the best way to put them in perspective. I also love the captions/descriptions that people post...the why's when's where's of their photos
I usually try to pick out what is best about the picture. Sometimes it is framing, composition, color, balance. Sometimes it is the subject matter. But sometimes I just "love it" for no reason except I just do.
@David
'But sometimes I just "love it" for no reason except I just do. '
I so agree with you, there are just so many gorgeous pics on here that I spend so much time flicking through them and find I don't comment as much as I could. I do enjoy just looking tho'
@msk1p2 Thank you so much for posting this as i have often thought about it as well. I simply do not have time to look and comment on everyone every day, even now i am rushing as i have a pile of ironing to do and if i dont go now i will be here for 2 more hours.I love getting comments on my own and when i say i love i really, really love it so i try to look at them all and just leave short comments.
I LOVE THIS SITE AND EVERYONE ON IT..
@msk1p2 Ditto! when we're browsing so many fabulous photos, it's hard to write a full reaction. This forum ROCKS and I am so inpired by what I am seeing out there (SOOC to heavily edited) Woo hoo!
i try to be more "specific" when I make comments, i want to let them know what I like the most about their photos, but sometimes I really don't have time or I simply just "love" that photo, that means everything about it! @rich57, LOL your comment! @azza_l, agree with you, Louise is certainly one person that consistantly leaving detailed and coments. In fact I mentioned it to her when we met for drinks last week, we all agreed that leaving comments to others became her "full-time" job :)) but whatever comment I receive, I sincerely, deeply appreciate the fact that people took time to stop by and view my photos. that really means a lot to me.
Sometimes i don;t feel like making any comments(specially ,if i'm only forcing myself..i really want to be truthfully honest on my remarks but..there are some pictures posted by others without really putting any effort on it and i can not say "hey, this is lovely or awesome" when actually it's not...i don't know what to do in this situation ?If i gave negative remarks they might get offended.. but me, you can critized my work and i will consider that a compliments..hahaha. well,i don;t know..Wish they can add here in 365.."LIKE and UNLIKE "button.!!so, we can just check it if we don't wanna write anything to comment....
I like the critiques from people rather than just "nice shot" but I know that as we get more followers it is hard to live a life and have the time to post even those small comments. It sometimes poses a dilemma. I also want to stay true to the idea of posting photos for myself and not the audience. I have to remind myself not to think what would my followers think about this shot. I believe, though, that all of this is good because it is helping and challenging me make photography a central part of my life everyday and from all the photos and comments I am really learning. I think this is such a diverse and really generous group of people and I am very appreciative of the privilege of being a part of it.
For me its very hard to find the words. I would love to give better comments but it takes so much time for me, so rather give small comment than no comments :-)

Also "banquet of photographic loveliness" is a pretty rad phraselet ^_^
