Acronyms, Abbreviations and decoding

May 10th, 2016
I have been using this site for almost a year now to post photos, but never really involved with any of the contests and other features beyond posting my project. As I look through the themes and contests I see multiple ongoing competitions and only a few have clear ways for newcomers to decipher them.

I have a request for those of us who have not been involved in these all along. Is there some sort of sticky or addition to the FAQ sheet that we could have to just explain these acronyms? For example - what does MFPIAC actually stand for? (My Favorite Picture.....)

Thanks.

when the new contest is posted there is usually an explanation to go with it, the voting not so much.
mfpiac means my favorite pictures in a collage, this has a theme selected by the host.
eotb stands for eye of the beholder, meaning photographing something considered ugly or uninteresting but making it beautiful
f-word is a theme where a word starting with f is selected as the theme
etsooi means edit the s@#t out of it, , making a dud photo into something with lots of editing,.
get-pushed is where you get teamed up with another 365er for the week and give each other a challenge to complete.
mundane object is maybe self explanatory.
dogwood 32 is a weekly challenge that has been going since the start of this year
one night stand or ons is an occasional week of set subjects.
what would you do? wwyd is where someone gives out a photo for others to edit in any way they like.
artist challenge selects an artist, might be a photographer, or maybe a painter or printmaker and try to emulate their style or subject matter.
is there another you are wondering about Jeff? they are all lots of fun i must say, get involved!

Well Jeff @jeffjones, it looks like Kali @kali66 has given you a pretty comprehensive lowdown there! I remember spending a while trying to find out what eotb stood for when I first started. I love the variety of challenges on 365 and have really enjoyed entering them - hope you will too if you decide to have a go!

Thanks much. I was really looking for them because of the requests for voting does not always explain what the assignment was. Now I think I will go and get this tattooed on my forehead so I don't forget them all.

Haha it's not too bad once you've been here a while. I remember people commenting on my photos saying stuff about pov and dof and being really confused in addition to all the challenge abbreviations! But it soon becomes second nature and as new challenges are posted, they are always explained! :)

@jeffjones Hi Jeff, I'm a relative newcomer to this site and yeah, numerous times have been dumbfounded by the acronym phenomenon. When uncertain, I've, asked on the threads and someone has always explained. However, I do think it would be more considerate on the part of who's hosting a challenge or voting on selections for one, to write out the acronym in parenthesis.

To add with the challenges or contests mentioned above, we also have b&w fortnight - a 2 week period theme in b&w. Tag challenge - 2 or 3 tags or word(s) blindly chosen. Colours or more - colour or a word rhyming to the color or choosing both color and the word to be used in the photo. Six word story - mainly consists 6 words to describe a story for your phot or a 6-word caption. Macro challenge. Song title challenge. City/town challenge.

Jeff, Thank you for this discussion. English my second language, not an expert at photography and ha ha old to makes this difficult for me at times. I sometimes do not know what the abbreviation stands for. How about making a list we can copy and keep as a reference. Everybody can then add to the list.
