Way to help

March 16th, 2011
After watching so many sad news about Japan, I hope that Canada can help them to go through this devastating time. I don't know what else we could do but maybe we can express our ways to help here.
Maybe say a prayer by posting a picture here.

If anyone actually wants to help, "praying" is not the thing to do. Send money.

I'm with @eyebrows on this one.

@sburbidge @eyebrows me to...but then I am a committed aethiest! Am sure there are lots of charities set up to donate to.

@eyebrows - Practically speaking, you're right. On the other hand, what harm can it do to pray? Faith and belief never hurt anyone :)

I dont see money can get to the place right now though yes for long term it will help but for now people there probably just want something better than material.
I am not religious either so dont get all offended when I say prayer. Yes money can buy things can it buy back their love ones from the disaster?

I think I'll take a little from column A, and little from column B.

Money will help long term and perhaps a prayer too as you never know, not sure about a photo unless we can auction them ;-)

I'd also be willing to give more than I do if I knew how much is being skimmed off for 'admin fees' etc.

Praying is always a good and powerful thing to do in addition to giving financially.

I believe in the power of prayer. I also will donate money through an agency, that I know will channel the money into the correct place/s. I cannot give a lot of money right now, but I know every little bit will help.

Any reputable charity should have the information available as to how much goes to operating costs vs the actual object of the charity, for example:
http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.d8aaecf214c576bf971e4cfe43181aa0/?vgnextoid=477859f392ce8110VgnVCM10000030f3870aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default

From the above website:
An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.

A pie chart showing where donations go when they are spent on humanitarian services:
http://www.redcross.org/www-files/Documents/pdf/international/Haiti/Haiti_Funds_PieChart.pdf

I know that this is the American Red Cross but I am using it as an example of how easy it should be to find this info, it took me all of 5 mins looking on their website to find it.

This is for the good of the group, I am not preaching at you @pete21, so please don't take it that way.

Sending good vibes, praying, what ever you want to name it can't hurt, even if it seems inconsequential, at least all bases are covered!

@katiegc24 no, praying does literally hurt - one thinks they're helping when they in actuality aren't, so one may not do any other activities which do help - such as donating money to relief funds. It's a dangerous thing to let people believe they are making a difference when there's no evidence whatsoever to suggest that they are, because there's every chance they'll stop at that.

@billcanada not offended :) Just wanted to add some rational practical advice too :)
