I don't have eight hundred dollars to get the camera I really want because of college and all that. But until then I'm going to get something small and cheap.
I use a Nikond Coolpix S550 (P&S) and can get some good results. Best feature is that you can move the focussing area to focus away from the centre. I never had a camera that does that before, so I love this.
I use a Canon Powershot S90 for probably more than half of my photos. It has awesome manual functionality and can shoot RAW, so it's only a small notch below a D-SLR. Buy it - I can't recommend it enough!
If I remember right, there's a particular Canon camera that has the same software as one of the EOS' and you can download a hack to unlock most of the functionality e.g. changing the ISO etc. I can't look it up just now as I'm at work, but have a hunt around!
LOVE my Powershot! Mine is only an A530 5mp but it takes awesome pictures. It has the ability to shoot in manual mode and I can change the shutter speed, ISO, etc.
Make sure you get one that has a viewfinder along with the LCD screen.
I love the powershot line. I have the A540 and also the Powershot SX10 IS and both were/are great cameras. I don't use it much since I got my DSLR, but check out my 1st month of photos. They were all done with the SX10.
I have the Cannon Powershot G11, its awesome, does almost everything a DSLR can and it fits in my pocket. Handles RAW, and has every combination of manual / automatic control you could possibly need. I love it.
the canons are great, but one must never overlook the panasonic lumix LX3...it has the same wide maximum aperture as the canon s90 for low light. comes with manual controls, plus a nice retro styling. it's a bit cheaper now since a newer model might be introduced. :)

Your photos are really good, Craigy P.

I can't afford the Canon Rebel just yet, so I'll work with what I can get, haha. :)
