Night Photography Tips

Interesting article, although the idea of taking a star trails exposure spanning the whole night is a bit out of the league of the digital sensors I've come across - could work with film though. Star trails really need to be composed from a series of shorter shots to keep the sensor cool.

Really needed this last night! Went to a Jubilee do in a field (so the light was fading) and also went up to see the beacon lit on the hill and that was really difficult, especially as I didn't really have time to loiter.

These tips are very interesting, thanks for sharing. I was thinking of starting a topic asking for advice because yesterday I had the chance to take a wonderful night picture but I wasn't able to do it properly. That situation I found myself in yesterday wasn't similar to any of those in the article.
It unexpected so I wasn't carrying a tripod with me either. But it's good to know all those things!

@velina Thanks I shall give this a go as I've been experimenting myself and was in the garden at midnight last night trying to get good shots of the moon!

@velina I wish I'd seen this post before this morning - I tried my first ever star trail http://365project.org/stoat/365/2012-06-10 and could have done with these tips !!. Thank you for posting - I will be out there again when we get another clear night
