Lightroom Question

March 22nd, 2013
Hiya,

I have Lightroom 3 and PSE10 which I have very gradually been learning how to use. Obviously, I already have my old method of importing, just using my Windows 7 folders (drag, drop, open those RAW photos to view and delete, import into Lightroom, etc).

I have been slowly changing the way I work, importing the photos directly into Lightroom, changing the file name, tagging, deleting, editing, exporting. I was then deleting the RAW file from the computer (keeping it only on my external harddrive). The only problem is that by doing that, I was then losing the connection between the file in my computer and the one in Lightroom.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can avoid losing the connection while still not storing all my RAW files on my computer. Also, any tips to make my editing process easier are much appreciated!

Thank you in advance for all your help.

I understand LR does not hold the actual picture. It only carries the editing data to apply to the pictures. You need to have the pictures in order to apply the edits.

You could use LR to import your photos from your camera to your external hard drive. You must then have your external hard drive connected to work on the photos. If you move imported photos from your PC to the external hard drive it is best to do it within LR then LR knows where they are.
