Just getting started with light painting

August 20th, 2013
Hello, I just started getting into photography and got my hands on a samsung WB21000 (a present). It;s great so far but the longest shutter speed is 1 s and I need to do some light painting> small objects like flowers, suns, short names, letters so far haven been a problem but i need to do some exercises for class that require a lot more time. is there anything I could do to get more time? Or should I borrow a camera for tis pics.
Thank you.

I did a quick review of your camera (or what I think may be your camera). If your camera has a "Night" setting I think you may be able to get up to 8 seconds. You can only go down to 1 second in Program mode. Just an idea :)

@grizzlysghost Thanks. I haven't thought of that since I'm using manual mode for this class and haven't really played around with all the other options just yet. Will tell you how that works out.

Good luck! I believe Page 125 of your user manual shows a table that indicates "Night" is from 8 to 1/2000 sec. One of the smart auto modes may be auto-detect for night landscape or night portraiture (pg 40). You may just have to play around with it a little bit, it's there somewhere! :)

Even though this post was from a little while back, I'd still like to share.

With my point and shoot (It's a Nikon S4100), I put it on Fireworks for lightpainting. I discovered this while taking pictures of some of those little fireworks kits and I jiggled the camera. It gives me a max shutter of 4 seconds.

Also, light painting is truly addicting. I do so much lightpainting, but I typically don't post it because I post other things. Once you start, you might find it really hard to stop.

@handerle I've done some light painting with my sony cybershot and use fireworks for some awesome wings and stuff but i did some cool pics with the one second shutter speed. School's been roughing me up so I haven't had the chance to try with the night but now I'll report when I get the chance and try with the fireworks option as well. Thanks
