"magic extractor"

November 3rd, 2010
So I recently updated from elements 7 to CS5. It is quite the leap and I am still working on figuring everything out.

One thing I miss from elements though was a thing that it called magic extractor. It made it easy to just scribble on the background and then it would cut out the subject for me.

Anybody know where it is/ what it is called in CS5?

Thank you in advance!

Magic wand tool?

I haven't used Elements in a long time, but I suspect that might be what you need. Top of the toolbar.

Here's a useful link to show where all the tools are in CS5:

In my experience, the full Photoshop doesn't include all of the neat, easy to use tools that they include in Elements. Elements was made with the average everyday consumer in mind where as Photoshop kept the professionals in mind.

Like Jinx said, try using the Magic Wand tool, I think thats probably closest to what your looking for.

Likely they assume you have a pen/tablet for doing complex cut and pastes... if you don't have one... might be something you could look into...

I'm thinking of moving to CS5 sometime soon as I'm still on CS1!!! But Photoshop is so massively expensive! I just hope CS1 will be compatible with Windows 7 64-bit which I'm having to shift to due to my hardware breakdown problems.

@electricwriter I think you will be lucky if it runs...

Like Jordan said, look into a tablet! Since I started using one my editing has been so much easier. i could not go back to a mouse. Takes some getting used-to though. If you do get one, get a good one like the Intuos 4 - better pressure sensitivity, shortcut buttons etc.
