Deep set eyes and dark circles

February 27th, 2011
Any tips for photographing subjects with both deep set eyes and dark circles? I find it difficult to get photos of some family members where they don't look nearly dead. Thanks for any suggestions!

Well, you made it sound like the Munsters are your family!

Don't shoot in high sun outside. Shoot with the sun , or light behind them. Use a fill flash, cranked up, pointing up and behind you. May help.

Get a cheap foamboard and ask your subject to hold it as if they would hold a tray, about 1 foot and a half down the head and the light should fill more of the shadows.
You can also use those 5 in one reflectors (you can get them in Ebay) .

@simonevision @5unflow3r Love the 5 in 1 reflectors. I have them (48") The are, for the low low price of 39.95, nothing less than spectacular.

I always post edit. I usually use the skin softener in Lightroom and then add brightness with the paint brush under the eyes, bridge of nose, just anywhere there is some dark shadows. I need to check out the 5 in 1 reflectors. Sounds great! Always better to not have to post edit!

@moncooga If there's a white wall and ceiling, shoot with the flash pointing backwards slightly, with a wide angle so it's reflecting straight on and filling in the eyes while illuminating them in a pleasant way.

Alternatively the option of them holding a reflector is good.

Bouncing a flash of the ceiling will often take away dark circles but leave the eyes very dark, bad for blues eyes but sometimes a nice effect with dark eyes, creating an almost black iris and pupil with a single light point, it's very subjective though.

One thing for sheer handiness is a diffuser that mimics bare bulb shooting, it sends the flashes light in a near 360 degree pattern, you'll see every person that works for party press using them, since they get a consistent effect and make for a quick portrait system...

I find with deep set eyes and dark circles taking the picture from above with them looking up at you helps brighten their eyes!

@gavincci Wouldn't the burn tool make them darker? Do you mean the "dodge" tool?

@triptych_angel yes in post editing ....burn to dark ...... to make the circle darker....

the question is ....
