canon 60D resolution issues in photoshop

April 1st, 2011
i've not seen this in my search of the discussion board, so apologies if i did miss it.

my question is that my cam is sent to the highest quality, "L", which is 18MP and 5184x3456 - but when i import into photoshop it tells me in "image size" that the rez is only 72, when it should be somewhere around 300.

i know that 72 is all you can see on the screen no matter how high the rez actually is - but i haven't had photoshop act all crazy like that before, it would still recognize the high rez.

i just wondered if anyone had any experience with this happening to them? i have an older version of photoshop, but like i said it hasn't happened before.

thanks if you can help!

I have a Canon 60D also, and photoshop 4 or something. This happens to me too, when I need something to be at 300 rez I just change it to that and Photoshop is ok with it. I'm guessing there is some kind of reasoning behind this since most people don't really need to work with such huge rez/image sizes. Personally I like this because my computer doesn't handle such large images well.

Hope that helped?

@lillithsnapped Do you mean 72Dpi? And you want 300 - It's just a matter of changing it in the image size panel (Ctrl+Alt+i)

Basically it changes the image size by putting more pixels in one amount of image area, increasing the detail/resolution while not altering the pixel dimensions...

What Adam said - nothing to do with your camera. Also, the 72 vs 300 makes absolutely no difference unless you use inches/cm when you resize a photo for print or web (I always just use actual pixels, and totally ignore the 72/240/300 DPI/PPI stuff).
