Ultrawide

April 6th, 2011
I am going to travel to two different cities in a couple of weeks and I am thinking about renting and ultrawide lens so I can try it but I can decide which one. I want to use it to take pictures around the city but also to people. I have a canon Rebel XS. What can you recommend ( and please share any pictures if you have)??

Thank you

I bought my daughter the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-f/4.5 lens and she loves it. It's as wide as you can go without getting a fisheye. On a crop sensor camera, it's 35mm equivalent to 16-35mm. You can get a third-party lens, but I only have experience with the Canon.

I don't have any of her pictures handy, but I can assure you it takes lovely pictures. Look out for distortion, especially at the widest setting and especially when shooting architecture (as opposed to mountains/landscapes).

No matter what lens you try, take lots of pictures at both the widest and longest focal lengths and the most shallow/deep apertures so you can get a good feel for it.

Tokina makes a fast F2.8 11-16mm. Google some reviews. Its really quite nice, and fast.

I have (well, Koshi has it now) the Canon 10-22mm, and I rate it highly. If it wasn't an EF-S lens, it would probably qualify as a pro "L" lens. Superb.

Sigma makes an 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6. At the wide end you need to stop down to about F8 to help sharpen the edges and remove the vignette, but it's significantly wider than 10mm. It's quite a bit of fun. (I have the Sigma 12-24mm which I use on a full frame sensor which gives me the same field of view as a 8-16mm on a cropped sensor.)

no question, rent the 10-22mm canon lens, it is awesome!

@vikdaddy @jinximages @crappysailor @bobtimmons Thank you for all the advise.. I think I'll go first with the 10-22mm canon and maybe try the tokina too.. I want to make sure which one I like more before even thinking about to buy one. I'll post some pictures in the future ( my trip is in two weeks).
