Help! Step up or step down adaptors

November 27th, 2011
I need some advice. I have lenses with front thread sizes of 52 and 62 mm. I am looking into a circular polarizer filter and figured I would get one in each size, until I saw the price of a good filter. So then I looked into adaptors to fit one onto both lenses. Sounds like a good idea, but I am not sure if I sould go up (a 52 mm filter on a 62 mm adaptor) or down (a 62 mm filter on a 52 mm adaptor).

Is there a difference? How will this affect my pictures? Thanks.

Well, to answer your question: you MUST go with the larger filter. You could never use a 52mm on your larger lens without covering part of the lens and rendering it useless.

However, the first circular polarizer I ever bought was $10 on eBay with free shipping and handling from China and it worked perfectly. Sure, I now use good B+W cpl's I spend $$$ on, but you don't need it.

62mm on 52mm would be best, the reverse would cause extreme vignetting on the larger filter thread lens. Get a low profile polarizer and adaptor.
