Just opposite where we live is the old pa site of Mahoetahi. In 1860 during the Maori Wars some Waikato Chiefs brought reinforcements to Taranaki. They stayed at this pa but the next morning were caught unawares by a force of 1000 British Troops. Nearly a third of the Maori warriors were killed. This wooden cross marks the site of their mass grave.

I think the older you get, the more you realise that some of these things that happened aren't really so very long ago historically speaking. It is interesting that only last week there was an apology made by the government for the Parihaka atrocity - that was quite a story!
