From the Wildnerness Lodge we were taken on a short trip and then a walk within the Whakapohai Wildlife Refuge where we saw of these penguins. They are endemic to New Zealand and breed along the south-western coasts of the South Island as well as on Stewart Island / Rakiura.
I hope they are thriving with the warming of the climate. I saw a program on climate change that was talking about penguins. Some were doing well because the food source had improved further north because of warmer waters.
