In the Biblioteca Malatestiana the books ("Codes") are chained to the "plutei", the wooden desks where the copyists would sit and perform their amazing work. The chains are unique to this place and are there from 1454...

The chains were bound within the book cover, not to prevent theft, but to maintain order: the bibliotheque is one of the first with a classification (and position) of the codes for subject matter. @golftragic Oh well, threaten was not meant: the chains are actually very thin and an amazing piece of workmanship!
