Spiderwort

Day 118 of 365: Spiderwort

2015 April 28: Our spiderwort is in full bloom now; I always enjoy seeing these beautiful flowers.

Spiderwort is an especially interesting flower to me: Research shows that spiderwort is an effective biological means of detecting cumulative doses of ionizing radiation (i.e., radiation that can damage living tissue) and of chemical pollution. When exposed to harmful radiation or pollution, the stamen hairs of the flower (which are normally blue or purple) turn noticeably pink.

I find it comforting that the stamen hairs on our flowers have always been blue/purple ...and I trust that they always will be!
I should have worn this on my collar during my career in the medical, field. I am afraid my flower would have been quite pink. Nice photo.
