Butterfly Weed

Day 156 of 365: Butterfly Weed

2015 June 5: While walking around my yard, I noticed a splash of very vivid orange in my neighbor's lot. As I drew closer I noticed that it was some intensely beautiful butterfly weed.

Butterfly weed is a type of milkweed ...an important wildflower because it is a host for monarch butterflies. The leaves are poisonous, but monarch butterfly caterpillars are able to eat them and by doing so become poisonous to predators.
Splendid bold and rich color!

WOW, I love these and that bright, bright orange!!! I have some of these seeds and didn't plant them, wonder if it's too late? Are the leaves poisonous to other animals? I would love to have some of these beauties growing around in my yard!! Anything to attract butterflies!! Huge FAV!

Thanks for your comments, @John @Angela @Kathy Butterfly weed is bright and beautiful, but it is my understanding that it is poisonous to any animal that grazes on large quantities of it. We usually see a lot of Monarchs in autumn; I assume it is because of my neighbor's butterfly weed and my butterfly bushes (Buddleja).
