Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Day 215 of 365: Ruby-throated Hummingbird

2015 August 3: Around late July each year we usually start spotting Ruby-throated Hummingbirds flying around in our yard; at that point they usually stay around until fall migration.

Last Friday was our first hummingbird sighting of this year: While sitting outdoors enjoying the early-afternoon sunshine, my son and I spotted one hovering at the flowers in one of my hanging baskets. I did not have my camera with me at the time, so I was unable to document this wonderful event.

Getting a photo soon became a determined challenge: On-and-off all weekend I spotted a hummingbird at our nectar feeder, but did not have any success in getting a decent photo.

The hummer seemed to be enjoying making it a game: fluttering in clear view for a few seconds at our feeder, and then quickly retreating to a nearby tree as soon as I grabbed my camera. Once, my husband told me, the hummer even flew over to our window and hovered there, staring in the entire time that I was running to grab my camera -- only to fly off as soon as I ran back in the room.

Today I finally had success! Although I had to settle for a photo taken through my kitchen window, I now have my first photo of this year to treasure the 2015 "Hummer season."

Good job getting this through the window. We have a male ruby throat at our feeder this year. He is a bit shyer than the females. Haven't had a good shot of him yet.

I'm surprised you don't get hummers before now!!! Ours usually get here in April and May and then stay all the way up until Oct, sometimes even into Nov if the summer is warm all the way until then. I get so excited when they first show up!! Usually there are only 5 or 6 to start with and then suddenly was have nearly 100 of them!! Every day I go out to feed them (twice a day) I stand there with my camera and talk to them and then back off a little and hold my camera up so they get used to it. Only takes about a week of this and then they ignore me being out there. This is a great first photo of the season and especially good through your window. I have funky windows and you can't take a good or even half good photo through them, something with the glass I guess!! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!! Huge FAV after all this blabbering!!
