2015 August 16: For the soil in our raised bed gardens, we use a blend of seasoned cotton hulls ("compost" from a nearby cotton gin), sand, and perlite. An interesting consequence of this is that occasionally some cotton seeds survive and sprout in our yard. When they do, I leave them in place to enjoy their awesome blooms!
I find cotton flowers fascinating, as both red and white blooms are present on the same plant at the same time! The original color of the blooms is white; but they soon become yellow, then pink, and finally a beautiful deep red before closing up into pods that become cotton bolls.
Today's photo is of blooms from a plant that sprouted at the edge of my garden this season.
How cool!! First, I didn't know cotton had blooms, all I've ever seen is the fields when they have the cotton balls on them!!! These are just gorgeous and I may have to buy some cotton seed just to get these flowers!! I sure learned something new today and have been here in the south for 37 years now!! WOW! This is just fantastic and love this shot of the two different colored flowers!! Instant FAV!!
Beautiful! Is this the same cotton plant that actually makes cotton? Or is that a silly question.... Stunning flowers, particularly the one of the left.
