2015 September 11: Early this evening a storm rolled through with heavy wind and rain. Just as it arrived I looked out the window at our nectar feeder and noticed with amusement that a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was making a valiant effort to catch the rapidly-swinging feeder and hold onto it long enough for a nice sip before the storm became too heavy.
After the storm, however, I looked out again and was quite surprised to see 4 hummingbirds buzzing around our feeder! I usually only see one, or occasionally two of these birds -- so it was a special treat to see four at once! I believe that they must be migrating through this area on their way south for the winter.
Two of the birds kept buzzing each other; then both would dive for the feeder and take a long synchronized drink before resuming their wary dance.
