Best viewed large.Lester and I went to the Wendover Arm Canal Festival this afternoon. Of the shots I took I chose this one for my main photo because it's about a great narrow boat custom: canal boat painting. Roses and castles are the traditional subjects used for decorating the boats.
For anyone interested in finding out about canal folk art, this looks to be a good source: http://www.canaljunction.com/narrowboat/art.htm

Lovely to see this. When we had our boat I used to paint roses and castles ware and sell at festivals. I still have a lot of pieces around my garden. Like most of my hobbies it has gone on hold while I concentrate on 365!
This is lovely - and typical of the boats we get up my way, though there's less scenery on the sides these days. There's also often decorated ironware, buckets and the like on the roof. The canal art is something I always enjoy seeing, and you can buy souvenir items at the little boatyard in Banbury.
