Alan Turing in slate

Also, in a different interpretation : http://365project.org/dulciknit/365/2014-01-19
Many, many thanks for taking the time to look at my photos and for all your lovely comments, they are all very much appreciated.

Lester and I went to Bletchley Park today. It's a museum now but at one time it was a Top Secret establishment and home to the codebreakers.

This is a statue of Alan Turing, an extremely influential figure in the world of computer science. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing
The statue, by Stephen Kettle and commissioned for Bletchley Park by American philanthropist Sidney E. Frank, (and a beautiful piece of work, I think) is made of slate and constructed in much the same way as those 3D puzzles that were so popular a while ago.

Here's a view of a replica of one of the code cracking machines Alan Turing was instrumental in developing : http://365project.org/dulciknit/on-the-day-extr/2012-08-05 The engineering is amazing.
A truly great man who served his country well and without whom we would not have had the technology to break the Enigma code, but was shunned by his fellow scientists and imprisoned under the old indecency laws, dying soon afterwards by his own hand, a broken man, unrecognized for his outstanding service to the free world until Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a posthumous apology in September 2009. I photographed another statue of him sitting on a bench in Manchester, holding an apple - the forbidden fruit - which I found very touching.

I am not of his fraternity or persuasion but I do believe that justice is owed to all! Thank you for sharing this.

I like the angle and composition of this shot. It's quite a strong image with the unusual construction.

What an amazing bit of statuary; very beautiful. I love the comment by @wordpixman who has summarised this man's life in a magnificent 69-word sentence!

@girlie ... Thank you Robin, I have often been told I deserve to serve a long sentence as punishment for the length of my sentences!

Fabulous capture of that amazing statue. Great angle and textures. Well done, Alison! Sounds like you're having a fun time.

@wordpixman Haha, in the olde days you would have been transported out here to Australia; and then we'd have the benefit of your beautiful camerawork here.

You've captured this beautifully.

I love this image. Beautifully done.
I keep meaning to go to Bletchley Park. Alan Turing is one of my personal heroes. He is a tragic figure and a victim of his time. Its sad - he had so much more to offer the world, especially in computing and mathematics.
