Flowers in memory of Captain Cunningham and Lieutenant Williams
The inscription on the plaque below this lovely little niche in St. Albans cathedral reads :
"This grille is in memory of Harold J. Cunningham, M.C. , Capt. Adjt., 6th Beds. Regt., killed in action 4th October 1917 and of Robin A. W. Williams, Lieut. 2nd KOYLI* killed in action on Hill 60 18 April 1915 "(Given by their mothers)"
It's a charming memorial to two brave men (the captain was awarded the Military Cross) and the cathedral's flower ladies always make sure there are fresh flowers placed in the niche.
There's only ever been just one vase in there when I've seen it on earlier visits, placed right behind the central pillar of the grille. On Monday I saw the extra jars of flowers (maybe the ladies had had some flowers left over from the large arrangements) and so took this shot.

A lovely shot, good composition, there's just something really nice about it. The colours of the flowers and the vases compliment the surrounding wall well. I like the positioning of the niche in your frame.
What a beautiful memorial to the two men - and to think it's been nearly 100 years - that's special. Love the simplicity of your composition - fitting for the event.
What a lovely capture....and love the story. Thank you for sharing this...it is very touching, and to see the extra flowers makes it even more special. Such beautiful bouquets in such a charming window setting!
Fave. I love this shot.
