I'm an abstract photography enthusiast but not exclusively so.

The stalks were in an isolated clump situated, at about my eye level, on a bank above the path on which I was standing. The path sloped down quite steeply from left to right as you look at this.
The area around the stalks was not in absolute shadow but mostly shaded by trees, and shrubs with dark, evergreen leaves. Low sunlight had penetrated enough to shine on the stalks, which were dead and dry, so nearly white - which meant the area surrounding them looked even darker by comparison.
I spot metered on the stalks, took my exposure from that - which caused the surroundings to come out darker still in the photograph because the stalks (being very pale and in a dense clump) were reflecting a lot of light, that was mostly shining on them - and enhanced the effect in processing.

Hope that makes sense and helps.
P.S. I didn't use flash, btw
