Make a Noise for Bafana Bafana

South Africa's "extra player" on the field at the 2010 World Cup will be a trumpet called a Vuvuzela. A big feature of the local soccer scene over the last 15 years, this plastic trumpet is quite hard to blow, but makes a massive noise. Fifa originally wanted to ban it from the stadiums, but realised that this product is unique to South Africa and will give a flavour to the tournament that will never be forgotten.

Local media orchestrated a national "Make a noise for Bafana Bafana" at midday today, and South Africans poured into the streets. I was driving down Main Road in Clarement, and this picture was taken of the staff at the Engen fuel station. They were challenging the staff of Pick 'n Pay across the road to a noise-duel! The noise carries quite a distance, and everyone is being warned that they should take earplugs to the games.
Brilliant. Such atmosphere.

Pictures of scenes just like this have been on the Australian news just tonight. Some SA expats had one of these trumpets at a party we attended last weekend. I can't say I'm a big fan of them!

I have no doubt that it's a joyous noise...albeit *noisy*! Looks like everyone's having a great deal of fun!

I've heard them on the TV. They're awful! Definately an advantage for the home team.
