In the centre of Cape Town is Trafalgar Place, the oldest open-air flower market in Cape Town. It's recently been revamped, but the essentials haven't changed: Yards and yards of flowers, and competitive flower sellers. The sellers are famous for their wit and commentary which is designed to keep you laughing, and spending.
I arrived with camera and no money to buy flowers. "Do you mind if I take a picture?" I asked. "No problem", said Yusaf "As long as you give me a donation for my daughter's school fund-raising". He pulled out the ubiquitous school raffle card and carefully wrote down may name while I emptied all my spare change into his hand. It's the first 365 picture I've paid for.
This isn't an easy way to make a living. As a consumer I'd rather buy flowers from a retailer who has refrigeration and temperature control. But here you get atmosphere and soul. Now isn't that worth a few day's vase-life?
