Remembering our turbulent past gives us hope for the future

One of my all-time favourite mural/graphics is this magnificent piece in District Six, Cape Town. It depicts the last four decades of the 20th century in South Africa, with a single, evocative image in the numbers of the relevant decade.

The pictures show the 60s dominated by the struggle of the disenfranchised; the community eruptions of the 70s; the endemic civil violence of the 80s against the state on an ongoing basis - and the 90s golden era of the birth of the new South Africa, led by Nelson Mandela.
beautiful photo.
