I then discovered the implications of not being part of the pre-school Mommy-mafia. At around 2pm my desolate, meandering spot burst into life as dozens of little ones arrived to play in and around the river. On the opposite bank an alfresco birthday party (complete with two ponies for rides) sprang up, and suddenly I was watching my step as the black plastic biker brigade roared up. My little piece of heavan is also popular with the kids.
And then I spied her. She wasn't thundering around with the others. Instead she was enjoying a quiet moment in the sun, probably looking for tadpoles . Happy Winter Solstice.
