Stainton Tower by ellida

Stainton Tower

The Stainton Tower is a folly standing 170 metres above the River Esk near Muncaster. A friend and I set out to shoot the Milky Way rising vertically out of the Tower. Just a half hour hike up the footpaths. Icy cold and it takes a while to set up all the apparatus.

I have a bit of an advantage with my Pentax K-1 because it has a built in Asto-tracker, so this exposure was 1 minute. Anything longer and the foreground blurs.

Not a first class shot though, as the light pollution is unavoidable.
That is completely amazing, I love it! Instant fav

@casablanca @suesmith @chejja @777margo @ludwigsdiana @sarah19 @gardenfolk @joansmor Thanks folks. I need to try again nearer March. Then I can shoot the Milky Way arching and exposing its galactic core. Always tomorrow ;-)

Wonderful shot, light pollution included. fav

@gamelee Thanks Lee. Light pollution free is hard to find. I look at the sites that show them, but Kielder and some Scottish locations are my nearest true black spots.

Super shot. I did not know that is what it was called; I just call it the Pepperpot. :-)

@callymazoo That's right, it's always the pepperpot. We used the OS map to find the footpath and discovered the 'official' name.
