This is a site reserved for flying of model aircraft. It is a small section of what was once an airfield. According to the Malta Aviation Museum Ta' Qali airfield had been laid down on the bed of an ancient lake. In pre-World War II times it had been used by civil airlines, its main customer being the Italian Ala Littoria. In 1940 the airport became RAF Station Ta' Qali. (The British pronounced and wrote it Ta' Kali.) A squadron stationed there (No 249) was to become the top-scoring squadron on Malta, claiming the 1000th enemy aircraft to fall to the Malta defences. Ta' Qali airfield was subjected to heavy bombing during the course of the war.
I took several photos of this enthusiast, flying his model glider high and low. There was only a slight breeze as indicated by the wind sock and the sock was sometimes pointing away from the man. In this shot I was lucky to get it when it was pointing to the man and the glider was low and in front of the tree which serves as a dark background for the glider.
There is an airstrip for these not too far from me but I've only seen people there once and you must be a member of their club to have access. This must have been fun to watch. Good shot!
@casablanca@olivetreeann It was fun and very hot. The sun was setting over the hill in the background and there was also a lot of smoke in a far away field which added to the haze in the background. I still approach shots like this with some apprehension as I do not know how people may take to being photographed.
