Today we commemorate the tragic events that took place in Valletta on 7th June 1919.
This is in remembrance of the riots of 1919 when the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island. Four people died.
I knew an old man who lived in my home town Hamrun who used to sell eggs on his decorated moped. Once, as he spoke of his childhood he told me that his father was one of the fallen on that tragic day in Valletta. "My father knew there were riots and he had gone out looking for me," he had told me.
