May seems to be the month of events across the Borough. At Teddington Lock the day started with the ‘Tudor Pull’ led by the Queen’s barge the Gloriana. The ceremony dates back to Tudor times and includes a ceremony at Hampton Court Palace during which the ‘stela’ (a short length of pipe made out of a hollowed out tree trunk) is passed to the Watermen of the river and then rowed down stream through Teddington Lock all the way to the Tower of London. It was a brilliant day for the ceremony as the sun glinted off of the gilded woodwork.
This was followed just half an hour later by the Dunkirk Little Ships traveling down the river to Ramsgate before crossing the English Channel to Dunkirk. There were 18 ships all of which took part in the evacuation of French and British troops from the beaches. Many of the boats originally mustered at Toughs Boat Yard in Teddington before traveling all the way to France. It was quite moving to see the boats freshly painted with immaculate woodwork and imagine what they have been though. Here’s some images from the day of both events...
I just finished looking at your other images Emma, and enjoyed them very much. The Gloriana is gorgeous, and I love the fact that this ancient tradition is still being followed. Your pictures of the little ships of Dunkirk are very moving, when one thinks of all they accomplished.
@neatz Sorry Anita, I'm so behind with posting. I only found out about the Tudor Pull on Friday afternoon seeing a comment on Twitter but had great difficulty in finding any other information. So many people have commented that they wished they had known about the event so they could have come and watched. I am going to try my best to post details of future events around the area when I hear about them on my photography FaceBook page and Twitter.
