A quintessential New Zealand photo: a tui (Latin name Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) on a flax bush. I took this in the Wellington CBD, along a walkway into the railway station - they are very adaptable birds. I have a lot of flax in my garden to attract draw native birds from a nearby sanctuary, but it isn't flowering yet.
The early European settlers called them parson birds due to the white tuft of feathers at the neck.
@graemestevens we live near a bird sanctuary and have tui and kereru around us but they are v hard to photograph. I guess these inner city birds aren't as shy
