This is a wooly bear caterpillar, and the color of its coat is often used to predict the severity of the coming winter. More black bands -- heavy snow; light color -- a mild winter. It may be an old wives' tale, but I have found it to be pretty accurate. So based on this one, I am leaving the boots in the back of the closet.
