do you know where your philtrum is? by fiveplustwo

do you know where your philtrum is?

it is that vertical depression between your upper lip and under your nose. it has no apparent function other than to put structure to the face (it disappears when you smile). and what is the mole about? well, in the old country, having a mole under your nose is good luck if it's on the right, not so lucky if it's on the left.

ha! indeed i had no idea what it is called. i wonder what the name in my language is. i have to look it up. anyhow, I may be wrong, but I have some leftover of information (again, it might be wrong) that that is the part which is last closed when the head is formed in the embryo.

Great selfie, love the sparkles

@monikozi The last part of the head that closes is called a fontanelle

@kjarn yes, you are right. But the fontanelle closes after birth. At the age of 2 or so (maybe even later). Whereas the philtrum closes the formation of the face in intrauterine life, some time in the first trimester of the pregnancy, during embryogenesis. But again, I might be wrong. I am no doctor. It was just a thought that occurred to me from the back of my mind when I saw the photo. Which, after all, should be the main subject here :D
Frankly, before reading the description, I thought the philtrum was the beauty mark below the nostril. :D Silly me.

@monikozi Sorry I was confused when you said head, I didn’t think about the face and yes you are right it’s where the three main sections of the face meet during the first trimester. I believe it’s one of the causes of a cleft palate If it doesn't meet properly.

@kjarn well, I did say head. and I was wrong. But I swear in my head it was face :D it just came out head. And if I think deeper, indeed there is that anomaly of the upper lip and palate do not weld to each other properly. The terms are quite confusing for me. Anyhow, the thing is that some of us know now that the area is called a philtrum (i still haven't found the equivalent in my language) and that the picture is so well done and for the given theme it is soooooo good.

No, I didn't know! Clever interpretation.
@monikozi in Dutch it's Filtrum, almost similar to the Greek philtron. Love potion, Liefdesdrank, Cupid's Bow. Oh, language is beautiful, isn't it. Found this on the internet: https://wordhistories.net/2017/01/08/philtrum/
