I was about a metre from this kookaburra (I'm assuming it's a young one if anyone knows how to tell) and it just watched me haughtily until if finally flew directly towards me, passing just to my right (and freaking me out so much I missed a great shot!)
He is gorgeous, we have a Mr and Mrs kookaburra who are regular visitors to our house.
According to Wikipedia juveniles have a shorter beak and the underside of the beak is dark. also they have strong white on the wing and mantle feathers.
