On a crystal clear day the Royal Sovereign Lighthouse, which stands 6.8 miles from the coast of Eastbourne, is clearly visible. It has been there since 1970 when it replaced a lightship which had been there nearly 100 years. It marks a shoal (area of shallow water) but has been decommissioned and will be removed.
