During the Seven Years War (1756-1763) Sissinghurst housed up to 3,000 naval war prisoners and Officers were in the tower where this graffiti has been found. They had been moved here due to infringing regulations in other gaols and the conditions were appalling, said to be one of the worst prisons in the country at the time.
