It's the start of the Queen's Birthday long weekend and the roads are deserted and at 6.30 on a Friday night they would normal be packed. It's also the opening of the ski season in the Snowy Mountains not far from Canberra. On a long weekend many Canberrans head to the ski fields, others to the coast. Either way they don't stay in town.
