A rare surviving example of a Tudor wooden-framed house, Hall i' th' Wood was originally built as a half-timbered hall in the early 16th century. Samuel Crompton's family lodged there and this is where he invented the spinning mule. It opened as a museum in 1902.
Today they held a Tudor day, and amongst other activities going on there was the making of little parcels tied with string, they contained mix herbs and spices that had been ground together with a mortar and pestle, the intention being to ward off evil spirits.
This photo is of that activity. Please view on black.
