Just outside the village of Keld, North Yorkshire, on a footpath which connects the village with Muker lies the curiously named Crackpot Hall. The building is now derelict and has been since the 1950's when subsidence from the local lead mining caused irreparable structural damage to the property.
I passed it today on a walk through the glorious Swaledale countryside in the Yorkshire Dales
Newcastle writer David Almond investigates the story of a wild child who was said to roam the Yorkshire Dales near Crackpot Hall in the 1930s - and makes a surprising discovery.
This is one of my favourite places. My cousins son owns Keld barn in Keld, and we have been to the Muker show a few times. I love it as much in February as in September.

What an intriguing scene you've captured here, and I feel the awe of having walked into it because of how you've led our eyes in. David Almond! I haven't seen him since we were in Japan together a few years ago (well, except we were on a panel on zoom together in September instead of being in Moscow as we would have been if it hadn't been for Covid). I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this link and reference to his work. I'm a huge fan of his. Do you know him? Say hello to him for me if you see him.
No, I don't know David Almond. I was just intrigued with crackpot hall and its history. I found the David Almond piece and thought I would share it, It's so interesting. Thank you.
@gamelee I just sent a link to your photo to David. I hope he looks at this so he can see how you've shared that fabulous interview. I enjoyed that interview with my morning coffee. A GREAT way for me to start my day. Thanks for sharing!
