Sunday Afternoon at the Pond

Nice sunny day brought out the neighborhood skaters and hockey players with their shovels to clear off some patches of the pond for skating.

Beautiful shot, silly question. How do they know it is safe to go over the ice ?

Good question. There used to be a sign posted by the city stating the ice conditions, guess they sent someone from maintenance out every day to check it. Then last year they took the sign away but the skaters keep coming. Usually there are some adults there too, so I would hope that they check it. It is not a deep pond and so tends to freeze quite solid if we have a few days of cold but still could be a problem if it warms up and the ice gets thin.
