@aecasey I discovered last year that, if I wanted to see the jays, putting whole, in shell, peanuts out usually attracted them. Then I just had to find a spot that I could see easily from the house to place the peanuts.
@aecasey Sorry just noticed this question now. The answer is yes! I have trouble with squirrels getting the peanuts. I usually put out only a few at a time, a couple of times a day. If the squirrels get there first then they get them but only the few I've put out and the jays are greedy too so, if the jays see them first, they just make several trips, taking one peanut each time, till they are all gone. It seems to be a sort of first to notice, gets all the goodies.
